The Last Time I Saw Caileigh is a dark, funny and heartfelt one-act play that explores nonbinary visibility through the lens of a missing person case. When Caileigh Richardson goes missing, the three people closest to them point fingers at one another, and at the ever elusive “system”, as they recount their last few days with Caileigh and try to uncover what happened to them. It asks questions about gender, who we hold accountable for injustice... and fish sex changes. It was devised collaboratively by Tori Sasso, Harun Cehovic, Matthias Moret and Helen Percival.

The Last Time I Saw Caileigh

CAILEIGH- Early twenties, any race/ethnicity. Nonbinary. (they/them) Moved to New York for college, but more likely to get away from home. Lost, in every sense. They've perfected performing "femininity" and are trying to work out what parts of themselves are real.

FARUK- Early to mid twenties, Iranian. (he/him) Caileigh's boyfriend of three years. Loyal to a fault, with an idiotic but endearing sense of humor. He loves Caileigh deeply and has imagined a life and a future with them, a dream he is willing to fight for.

MAUREEN- Mid to late forties, any race/ethnicity. (she/her) Caileigh's aunt. Caileigh has been living with her since moving to the city four years ago. She's a feminist, or was by the standards of 20 years ago. She’s shrunken herself to fit inside her marriage. Wants to support Caileigh, but doesn’t quite understand “the whole non-binary thing”.

MAXIME- Early twenties, any race/ethnicity. (he/him) Caileigh's best friend. Has spent a lot of his life hiding. He's crafted a "gay best friend” persona that he thinks will protect him from the deep hurt and anger he feels surrounding his own queerness. Fiercely blames the other two for Caileigh’s disappearance in an attempt to ignore his own guilt about what happened.
