Blackademics

by Idris Goodwin

Two ravenous female African-American scholars arrive for their coveted dinner reservation at a select café. But what starts as a celebration, quickly takes a raucous turn. Banter turns to debate, and debate into battle as the women figuratively and literally vie for a seat at the table.

This play drew me in from page one and didn't let go until the end. It is filled with incredibly powerful statements on the human condition. It uses suspense and creeping horror deliciously. With simple staging requirements and a small cast, this could be perfect for a festival.

I'm using Mr. Goodwin's play, #matter, in my classroom, so I was excited to read one of his longer scripts. Blackademics' breadth and depth are amazing. Goodwin creates a beautiful metaphor for the competition and white supremacy we see in academia. He subtly (and sometimes overtly) drifts into his signature break beat poetry, so I'm going to have to go back and read some of the poetry aloud to understand the rhythms better. What a clever show!

Competition never leaves the table especially when you're in academia. A fascinating debate that is hilarious and so delightfully fun! Spectacular!
