Underworld meets underworld in Jewish Brooklyn: A Brokhe is set in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Brownsville, in the early 1950s. Thousands of Eastern European Jews have arrived in the United States after the horrors of WWII, and before they were known as survivors, they were simply refugees. In A Brokhe, members of the Brayndls family are recently arrived from Poland, by way of a Displaced Persons camp in Germany. They find themselves to be marginal people in a marginal neighborhood, with the path to the American dream much more dangerous than imagined. The family members, PERETS, JENNY and DORA are haunted by the wartime past and threatened by American forces they don’t quite understand. KASRIEL BUCHBINDER, a handsome young gangster has his sights on the youngest Brayndls daughter, DORA. Caught in the middle is LEYBELE SHPREKHER, a queer, Yiddish speaking bookie with a sideline in dream interpreting and an ambiguous relationship to the local gang controlling the neighborhood. With guns, ghosts, and gangsters, A Brokhe explores the role of violence in contemporary Jewish history and the Jewish response to trauma.
