Ground Chuck

Beauty Chisholm, a lunch lady at the all-white Sycamore Elementary School in the segregated South, gets her daughter Jo hired as a janitor, even though Jo finds children to be disgusting creatures. During some on-the-job training in the cafeteria kitchen, Jo realizes she has grossly underestimated the situation.

A fantastic satire with elements of grotesque, Ground Chuck brings levity to incredibly serious topics and pushes a mother-daughter conflict into new territory. Great roles for women of color! Bring your lunch from home, folks, but produce this play!

The casualness of the show highlights the dark comedy even more. I kept thinking, "Wait, is this really happening?" in the best way. I laughed out loud in delighted surprise when I saw it performed!

Morbid, poignant, and funny. It's a great show.
