381 BLEECKER

It’s 2015, and Meg, an avant-garde choreographer in her early 60s, is losing the West Village apartment where she’s spent her entire adult life. When her sister, Ellen, shows up with her son, David, to help Meg pack, the two women must reckon with a complicated snarl of old wounds connected to their brother’s battle with AIDS in the 1980s.

My first job out of college was in the HIV+ community, and this script captures the heartbreak and helplessness of that period perfectly. Marotta's depiction of illness and family is complex and poignant, and watching her characters struggle with forgiveness (life is overflowing with questions of forgiveness) is gorgeous and sadly too rare. Why this script hasn't seen a full production yet is a mystery.

Grittily poetic, unrelentingly brave. This play tells a beautiful story with love and integrity. It also offers complex, authentic roles for four actresses of two generations - two sets of actors portray sisters Meg and Ellen. Working on this play in development has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
