Tocaya

A lesbian AF summer wedding, a 'ride or die' pocha friendship, a Hollywood house guest. It is August in Chicago, the time of year when pochas crave paletas and the city is melting. Meet Gabi and Sonia, two Mexican American 'carnalas de alma' as they grapple with a wedding, toxicity, and taking leaps. What happens when women strike a match? Which are the vows that last?

Playwrights Foundation congratulates TOCAYA as a Finalist for BAPF 2020. This play rose to the top 35 out of 735 plays submitted, and was discussed at length by our Bay Area Literary Council for consideration in our season. We loved how this play uses the language of theater to illuminate challenging perspectives and compelling intersectional questions. This play ultimately moved & inspired us and spoke to the core mission of PF. We hope that once we’re allowed to return to our theaters again, it will be considered for production to reach new audiences.

This play is about the kind of friendships words can't describe. It's fitting then that the title does not translate. This is specifically Mexican story that needs to be produced. This is a story for and by people that have been excluded from the theatre except in stories that revolved around immigration, crime and folklore. This is a play where Mexican women get to be fully fleshed and messy. Choices are made in this play that may surprise but in the end always make sense. This is the sign of a mater playwright.
