tender of you too

FULL LENGTH: High-schoolers Allegra and Tara meet when cast in the school play as Frances Willard and Mary Bannister — two historical leaders of the late-1800s Women's Christian Temperance Movement, who shared a "very close friendship." Through rehearsals, sleepovers and Ouija boards, Allegra and Tara explore just how similar — and dissimilar — they are to Frances and Mary.

This heartfelt play expresses the vulnerability and bravery of queer teenage AFAB people so realistically! Tara and Allegra are in the all too common moment of intense friendship when you are still trying to figure out if you are the only one feeling something more. Add in a real-life historical "Sappho and her friends" dynamic present in the play Tara and "Leggy" are rehearsing, and you've got an additional dynamic of reclaimed queerness. I would love to see this staged!

A beautiful play that allows its characters to have both lighthearted and painful moments in their love story. Tara and Allegra untangle their feelings for each other as they untangle Frances and Mary's relationship, too. Anya Richkind's story feels authentic to the present moment and simultaneously transported at times to a space that transcends era. "tender of you too" is a fantastic piece for two young actors that explores queerness, both modern and historical, in a lovely way.

This play does a fantastic job of capturing the voices of teenage girls and the confusion and excitement that comes when one is dealing with these new feelings and discoveries. The writing is very accessible and the weaving of the historical figures into the piece feels effortless and elevates the themes and resonance of the piece.
