May Washington throws a rock at what was meant to be a peaceful protest and smashes a window. Suddenly the weight crushing her lungs lifts just for a moment and she is able to breathe deeply. Yearning to feel this sense of peace once more, May becomes more violent - punching the man who was screaming at her for being a murderer with his pro-life signs in hand - and when the presidential election elects the first woman vice president, May decides it’s time to commit treason and murder the president.

A full length play, set in the not-so-distant future, Easy as Pie delves into the exploration of sexism in politics, the idea of pro-choice - whether that’s abortion or just generally giving people the option to make their own decisions - and the affects and consequences of desperation.

I'm so fascinated by tales of female revenge, and what brings women to actually act upon their rage in a physical way. Melanie has woven together a truly exciting ensemble piece that lets us feel the thrilling catharsis that comes with sweet, sweet vengeance while still grounding us in the frustrating realities of our political climate. I can't wait to see where this piece goes!

I love this play. The dialogue is smart and fast, and the characters are complex. Everything about the story - from the frustration that sparks May's decision, to the aftermath of her actions - feels entirely plausible. As someone who is tired of watching extremely qualified women lose elections to less qualified men, this was a nice piece of revenge fantasy - and a good reminder that getting a woman in the White House is really just the beginning of the fight.
