Robert Hassan, a Palestinian-American, returns to Bethlehem after twenty years in exile to find his childhood home converted into a medical clinic. There he encounters two young lovers, Jumana and Sami, whose passionate nationalism rekindles his own dormant patriotic feelings. When Robert discovers that Jumana has been secretly collaborating with Israeli intelligence in exchange for safe passage to Sweden, he faces a devastating choice between his loyalty to the Palestinian cause and his conscience, while his own violent past threatens to destroy any chance of redemption.
