Zamboni Godot

by Ayun Halliday

Zamboni Godot is a midlife meditation on the comedy of existence, the hell of long term relationships and the play where nothing happens twice. Didi (neé Denise) and Gogo bide their time in 21 infernal landscapes ranging from the DMV to the ER, surrounded by equally isolated middle-aged women. Could a message from Godot give them a greater sense of purpose or is he merely a convenient excuse that keeps them...

Didi (neé Denise) and Gogo bide their time in 21 infernal landscapes ranging from the DMV to the ER, surrounded by equally isolated middle-aged women. A tour de force for two midlife female actors with an expandable Greek chorus of the same. (minimum of 4)

“Ever feel as though your life’s a one panel cartoon?” In this case, it’s a series of twenty-one, depicting the plight of Beckett’s beloved clowns, in a nightmarish-yet-hilarious Groundhog’s Day scenario. Halliday leaps at every chance to satirize, and doesn’t disappoint in the final frame. Simply brilliant.

Halliday's protagonists wait everywhere -- in the emergency room, at the amusement park, at the BMV -- highlighting modern issues and anxieties in this hilarious, absurdist deconstruction of Beckett's classic text. The original is merely a template for the playwright's spare and insightful examination of every contemporary indignity. Very, very funny, and "100% Bechdel Test Approved!"
