Recommendations of Or,

  • Faith de Savigné: Or,

This play presents the emerging friendship between Aphra Behn, former spy, aspiring playwright, and Nell Gwynne, former fruit seller, current star actor. With theatrical flair, this rom-com-bedroom-farce -dramedy has the characters stealthily negotiating the political intrigues of late 17th century London. It’s language and actions feel both timely and timeless as you’re never sure who is playing who.

A fantastic play for a passionate theatre professional as we watch the journey of Aphra from the spy trade toward becoming the first professional female playwright. Well done!

Easily on my list of all time favorite plays! Like Ms. Behn herself, this play defies labels and truly explores what it means to be human from so many facets. Blending humor, drama, prose, poetry, sex, love, and everything in between; Ms. Duffy Adams has baked a veritable feast for the senses.

  • Michael Aman: Or,

Liz Duffy Adams OR brings to life a character plucked from every theater student's notebook breathing life into the notorious APhra Behn in a comic and poetic style. In a highly theatrical use of 3 actors to play a multiple of characters, OR revels in a comic sex farce style and pays off grandly. I highly recommend this play for the story characters and brilliant use of language.

  • Nandita Shenoy: Or,

This is truly one of my favorite contemporary plays. "Or," uses historical drama to comment on traditional gender roles in our current society. It has three terrific roles for actors to sink their teeth into and truly explore their own creativity. I was exhilarated after leaving the original production in New York. Still one of my favorite theatrical experiences!

  • Ian Thal: Or,

This playful sex farce manages to also contain gorgeous poetry and a satirical meditation on the rise, fall, and restoration of both aesthetic and libidinal freedoms -- with a wink at the commerce, nasty skullduggery and political compromises that could get us there. Its message seems to work no matter who is in government.

I reviewed the 2019 Theatre Prometheus production in Washington, DC:

Sexy, funny, and fast-paced. With poetic language, witty repartee, and physical comedy, the play remains accessible to general audiences while including quite a few Restoration Comedy and Gender Studies in-jokes. I have been involved in productions of “Or,” with small companies in Chicago and Ann Arbor. Audiences were delighted by both!

Fabulous use of language, witty, theatrical, intriguing, funny -- this play has it all! Plus, it's a small cast w/great gender-bending roles for actors. An artistic director's dream.

A witty, edgy, dangerous intellectual romp with real verve, gloriously varied use of language and some genuine surprises. Adams' three roles are full-out feasts for the actors in a show that is often thought-provoking, and always entertaining.
