  • Dave Osmundsen: End Days

I love how this play starts with the broad "types"-- the fanatically religious mother, the absent-minded father, the droll and eye-rolling daughter, the quirky boy next door. But Lauder doesn't settle for types. She subverts the audience's expectations throughout the play by unveiling the depths of her characters. The character of Sylvia, the Evangelical mother, particularly stood out to me. Rather than a head shrieking fire-and-brimstone, Laufer poignantly depicts her as a woman desperate to believe in something larger than herself, and wants others to believe. Funny, smart, original and engaging story - fantastic characters, beautiful writing. Audiences still bring this play up, 2 years after we did it.

Hilarious throughout, but not without the deeper sense of connection that plays need to truly shine.

I really adore End Days. There's so much that is incredibly theatrically rich, including having one actor play both Jesus and Stephen Hawking. However, what really makes the play stay with me is the tenderness in the writing.

So very proud to have been a part of the company that originally produced this wonderful, funny, warm, compelling comedy. And that it was a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere project. If you haven't read it do it now - you'll be delighted, moved and uplifted.
