Recommendations of Clown Bar, a clown noir

  • D.W. Gregory: Clown Bar, a clown noir

Just picked this up recently and couldn't stop laughing. Such a wild conceit, so clever and sharp. Brings new meaning to the word 'parody.' It's beyond parody. A world unto itself. Comic genius at work.

Genuinely one of the best modern plays I've read. I bought the script almost immediately after reading the title- I love clowns, I (kinda) love bars, so Clown Bar had to be right up my alley! I definitely was not disappointed by this hilarious yet surprisingly deep noir story. I truly cannot recommend this show enough!

  • Chelsea Frandsen: Clown Bar, a clown noir

I *finally* got my hands on a copy of this script and was not disappointed. Adam Szymkowicz has taken all the pulp and noir fiction archetypes and put them into the bodies of clowns to tell a story that is darkly comic and beautifully done(Bobo in particular freaks me the heck out!). Perfect not just for Halloween but for any time of the year.

I saw this hilarious and delightful show in New Orleans, and had a wonderful time. The play intertwines humor and pathos like only Adam's plays can do. I imagine it has enough depth and nuance that it could support a pretty broad range of performance styles, thus making it a strong choice for a lot of different theater aesthetics and audiences. This is a show that can put butts in seats.

  • Eric Pfeffinger: Clown Bar, a clown noir

Hard-boiled, red-nosed, big-shoed. A relentlessly delightful exercise in funny and fanciful absurdity that's anchored in attentive worldbuilding and characters drawn with real integrity and surprisingly deep-rooted pain.

Completely imaginative, stark, interesting, metaphoric and funny play. Well written, highly producible!

I hate you, Clown Bar. I hate you because clowns are evil and freak me out and you are a play filled with them that I nonetheless couldn't resist. You're hilarious, you're dark, you're musical, you're sad, you're violent, and you're wildly theatrical. Hate hate hate you, Clown Bar, for making me love you so. Get lost.

Laugh out loud funny and an actor's dream. (Who doesn't want to be a gun-toting, murder-in-cold-blood-clown?) A riotous evening of fun, and a delightful smash fusion of noir and clown, hilarity and heartbreak.
