Recommendations of Am I White

  • Nick Malakhow: Am I White

Supremely theatrical and compelling work that explores both systemic and internalized racism, shame, and the germ of hatred. Not only is the storytelling and characterization bold and engaging, but the theatrical world is vivid and unique. The use of meta-theater, minstrel tropes, and irregular dreamlike sequences is awesome. I'd love to see a creative and resource production company tackle this wonderful piece.

  • Kullen Burnet: Am I White

This play is a laceration, an elegiac reckoning of immense yet subtle power. Cuffing you in with its challenging complexity Am I White locks you into cutting dialogue, exciting character dynamics, and poetical interrogations ruminating on systemic racism, internalized racism and mental illness to name a few. Read this!

I have loved this play for years. Adrienne Dawes is a master of dialogue and this play is a sharp and intense look at race relations in America. Gorgeous writing, cannot recommend highly enough!

  • Rachel Greene: Am I White

MonologueBank highly recommends Adrienne Dawes' writing. (She is a joy to deal with "administratively" as well.) There are some interesting monologues to be found in AM I WHITE. One features Wesley and his attempt at forgiveness for the unforgivable. The writing is economic and potent, and leaves you wondering how much empathy do those charged with racially motivated crimes deserve.

  • David Hansen: Am I White

Dawes' striking and effective play questions the very nature of race, and the madness that inflicts our nation as a result of our original sin -- not just slavery, but the self-hypnosis under which we put ourselves to create an artificial concept called "race" by which others are held apart. A taut prison drama set in the months before 9/11, it was a startling reminder of a time when it was unthinkable that a white supremacist could ever become President again. Highly recommended!
