←Recommendations of Last Night and the Night Before

I was fortunate enough to see this play produced at the Denver Center of the Performing Arts. The playwright writes with immense passion, which also channels into riveting storytelling focused on characters with incredible dimension and depth. A masterful balance of poetry, dialogue, and action, this is a play that deserves every ounce of praise for its honest and compelling look at humanity.

This play ripped a hole in me. It has been a long time since a play engrossed me so thoroughly that my mind shut down and my my biology kicked in. It is trite to say, but nevertheless true...this play had me laughing and weeping. I cannot wait to see LAST NIGHT AND THE NIGHT BEFORE realized on stage. It is breathtaking in it's excavation of the human condition. Thank you!

This play gripped me from the very beginning, carrying me along its fearless current into deep, complex, tragic territory. The characters and dialogue ring with the unmistakable tone of truth telling. Humor is also present in this richly textured work that balances despair with hope through vulnerable and exposed lives. A masterful play; powerful, compassionate, wise, that speaks not only about what can be lost, but more importantly, what can be found.

A moving, gripping, and often surprisingly funny play that blends tense stakes, disarming lyricism, and refreshing humor. I came away from the play particularly struck by the characters -- these are five intricately drawn, convincingly flawed, completely recognizable human beings that the audience roots for and that any actor would love to play.

I had the pleasure of seeing SAM (LAST NIGHT AND THE NIGHT BEFORE) read twice; at NNPN and Orlando Shakes. Both times I was moved to call my own sister afterwards and tell her that I loved and missed her. All of the relationships in SAM are moving but the core sister relationship is true and deep and painful and funny in a way that we rarely see on-stage. I highly recommend this play.

Saw this at the NNPN Showcase. There's so much to admire about this play - its humor and lyricism, an addiction narrative free of easy sentiment or sensationalism - but the thing that got me is the central and evolving relationship between Sam and Rachel. Moment to moment I was eager to see what would happen to them next. Highly recommend.

I read SAM for inclusion in PlayFest at Orlando Shakespeare Theater and then again, for the National Showcase of New Plays 2015 for the NNPN. (It was included in both.) It is one of the most moving plays I've read all year. It tackles abandonment and addiction and loss and longing with an extremely empathic voice. You can tell that the playwright not only knows these characters, she loves them. A sense of mystery drives the action. Terrible and redemptive deeds are examined without judgment. I predict a feeding frenzy at the Showcase for an NNPN Rolling World Premiere.

SAM is a gorgeous, stirring play about addiction, family, and both the loss and reclaiming of innocence. The language is lyrical and vivid, and the story is both epic and intimate, gritty and tender. I attended a reading of the play at Orlando Shakespeare Theater and the very positive audience response was palpable; this is a story that everyone can touch and find themselves in.
