Night in Alachua County

by Jennifer Rumberger

Violet always knew she’d return to save her sister Lily from the clutches of their unrelenting and controlling mother Crystal one day. But when Lily calls her claiming to have seen a strange man in her bedroom, Violet knows that time is now. Crystal has other plans for Lily, however, and she's not about to let anyone -- not even her own daughter -- stand in her way.

Through an all-female cast of masterfully crafted characters, Rumberger creates an unnerving world where the real monsters are human. This deeply disturbing script had me on the edge of my seat!

I had the privilege of working on this play when it was produced by WildClaw Theatre in Chicago. It is steeped with the atmosphere of dread and family secrets that you would hope for in a modern gothic story set in Florida, and then adds a layer of genuine supernatural horror that amplifies the already disturbing subject matter. The bursts of genuine humor serve to make the dark turns that much more unnerving when they arrive. I am a huge fan of this play!

Saw this in production, thanks to Wildclaw Theatre, and I got the creepy-crawlies from the second the lights rose. A fantastic family secrets play with a gothic bombast that allows for wonderful side characters who deserve their own plays!
