A Very Brief Summary

A driven young woman attempts to take control of a reclusive middle aged widower’s life.

A Somewhat Longer Summary

JOHN sends single boxes of pudding anonymously in the mail to strangers, trying to stay connected to the world after the death of his wife. Enter MARY, who wants everything the world has to offer and will do just about anything to get it.

And JOHN may just be MARY’S ticket to ride. His “sweet little hobby” fits very nicely indeed with MARY’S marketing career and plans to take over the corporate world.

Her new client is Mother’s Modest Pudding, a “scrappy little upstart looking to make its place in the world.” And JOHN, in MARY’S shrewd opinion, would make a perfect living logo/mascot for their campaign.

However JOHN has other ideas and MARY uses every trick in her playbook to bring him around. Finally JOHN agrees to help MARY because he is falling in love with her.

But with JOHN in place to be the “Crazy Pudding Man”, MARY’S time with him is limited and their relationship starts to fall apart. Because JOHN wants more from their relationship than show business and sex.

Is MARY just using JOHN? Will JOHN sabotage the “Crazy Pudding Man’s” debut on a nationwide TV show? Will the first five rows of the audience get splashed with pudding during the TV shoot?

It’s emotional touch and go with a happy ending…

Sort of.

And, fortunately, the audience stays dry but not before they have very good cause to worry that they won’t…

I saw this play a couple of years go and STILL remember it. Funny as hell, also a little heartbreaking. My perfect combo for a satisfying evening of theater. The dialogue sparkles, too!
