Recommendations of Why We Go to Florida

  • Bethany Dickens Assaf: Why We Go to Florida

I’m so grateful this play exists - it spoke deeply to me personally and is filled with such shattering beauty. All three characters are incredibly rich, containing full worlds. Their pasts are fully realized and deeply expressed without detracting from a compelling, well-motivated story in the present. Florida itself is drawn with equal depth and care. I cannot express the beauty of the end of the penultimate scene and everything it represents. A tour de force of characterization!

  • Samara Siskind: Why We Go to Florida

Why We Go to Florida took my breath away, with laughter, then tears, and laughter again. Centering on family that is lost and family that is found, Kenneth Jones has crafted a rich story that is at times sympathetic, at times uproarious, and always grounded in authenticity. His multi-layered characters stay with you long after they've left the stage in this beautifully complex play about grief, acceptance, forgiveness, saying goodbye and finally saying hello.

I had the pleasure of seeing the reading of Why We Go to Florida at Florida Rep's PlayLab. It's a gorgeous script with 2 powerhouse roles for women. The play is hilarious, moving, emotional, nuanced, and so well-written. It never falls into stereotypes; rather, all three roles are masterfully rendered, complex, round, real. Ken's play was an audience favorite for good reason. Read it. Produce it. I can't wait to see it fully realized in production!

  • Cheryl Bear: Why We Go to Florida

An incredibly powerful confrontation on the man lost to AIDS between the mother and partner left behind. For the first time, a mother learns the truth of who her son was and a partner finally meets the family he never was given the chance to be a part of. A great deal is tackled magnificently in this impactful and important work.

  • Shelley McPherson: Why We Go to Florida

Two Henrys is a beautiful play about love, acceptance, grief and forgiveness. The three onstage characters are joined by a large community of offstage characters, alive and dead, who are as human and sympathetic as the characters we come to know. Heart-breaking and redemptive. Riveting from start to finish.

One of the most beautiful scripts I've read in along time. There were only about a hundred times I teared up reading it off the page, and laced throughout the play are also incredible moments of humanity and humor. I am a huge fan of Kenneth Jones' work. He has a deft hand with plays that capture touching and deep human moments, that never feel overly dramatized or overly sentimental. They're aren't overly anything in fact, they're wonderful and impeccable. I would LOVE to see this fully produced, it belongs in theaters' seasons all around the country.
