Good worldbuilding is like good sound design. If you’re not actively noticing it happening, you’re in the presence of a pro. Poynton’s addictive script is triply beautiful in genre savvy, construction, and character, & is one you need to know about. I left it musing on the many forms of sacrifice. Not just those we make for ourselves or others, but what we’re willing to part with or give up. And what it means to make those decisions in others’ stead, their permission be damned. Tremendous work.

This play is pure good sci-fi. A large and detailed setting, held together by complex and understandable characters, in a story that's strong emotionally and carries with it a painful warning towards our future. Melds the deep challenge of lightspeed travel into a narrative that weaves it with math, mental health, addiction, politics, identity, and inevitability.

Holy WOW, what an awesome script. So imaginative and powerful - transports us to a different and multi-dimensional world, but (as with all great sci-fi) the characters and challenges in this world are wildly relatable to our own. Would love to see this done!

If you're looking to engage new audiences, read this one! As the dramaturg for Bella's reading at Great Plains Theatre Conference, we loved the compelling, high stakes problems that the characters are navigating. Bella is able to confidently guide the audience not only through all the math and science, but also the myriad of themes such as exploitation/labor, gender stereotyping, economic struggles and crowdfunding, discrimination, environmental disasters...the list goes on, you got to read this one! This is a passionately told play, it will sweep you away to another galaxy that mirrors our...

A cold, complex and realistic, very haunting world. Determined characters, intense struggles and a gritty sci fi atmosphere not unlike Firefly.

Months later, I still think about it.

  • Jon Elston: Speed of Light

This play is a rare & precious thing indeed: a compelling, suspenseful science fiction thriller hinging on strong female protagonists (not even 1, but really 3) and their valiant attempts to harness their intellects and the sheer force of their wills to avert extinction-level disaster... naturally, against every odd & obstacle. Bella Poynton is writing bold, progressive, visionary theatre, speculative in narrative but powerfully resonant with contemporary socio-political concerns. Road Less Traveled Productions (Associate Member, NNPN) is producing the world premiere of this play in September...
