  • Janet Carpman: Stick and Move

Clever, funny, and a perfect short play for four talented actors to show how young, would-be lovers can overcome the temptation to outsource their strategic moves.

It can be tough to write a 10 minute play that not only tells a complete story, but does so with distinctive characters, a surprising arc, and great physicality. This first date play accomplishes all of this and more. "Stick and Move" is original, clever, and hilarious.

  • David Beardsley: Stick and Move

Dating as a contact sport, boxing to be precise, in which the unwritten rules of engagement prevent real engagement. It’s a terrific play that was made into a fun short film in 2020 by The Hive Collective. We watch the protagonists shift from a fancy restaurant table to their respective boxing corners for pep talks and strategy sessions. Brilliant and funny, but also heartfelt. This is everything a ten minute play should be.

  • Steven G. Martin: Stick and Move

This feel-good romantic comedy has a terrific concept at its core, strong banter, and a nice sense of irony.

Credit Lam for not just stopping at a wonderful premise for this play. More detail and complexity is added after the initial reveal, and then doubled up prior to the climax. It's really wonderful writing that any audience will enjoy. And then, just before the end, comes the perfect coda to this story.

"Stick and Move" has a strong, varied production history, and it is well deserved.

Middle aged boxing coaches/referees Sully and Doris offer advice to Anthony and Haley who are having their first date. What's the best way to "engage" -- with aggression or break the rules and be yourself with a dose of humility? Clever and fun!

  • James McLindon: Stick and Move

A brilliant idea for a play, sort of ROCKY cross-pollinated with a rom com. And it comes with a message, that the rules and terms of engagement that many people swear by in the dating context are better off broken.

  • Bryan Stubbles: Stick and Move

Sweet, silly and with a lot of heart, Stick and Move does a great job of presenting courtship via the prism of a boxing match. Lam's writing is very dextrous. Highly recommended, especially for those "love" themed short play nights theatres like to have.
