  • David Templeton: The True Meaning of Christmas

‘The True Meaning of Christmas’ is one twisted little delight of a play. It’s so funny I had to read it a second time … out loud … to my family, who could not stop laughing. Ironically, now I want there to be an actual Escape From the North Pole experience at my local mall. I would actually go to that. And vampire reindeer? Bring ‘em on! This one is hilarious.

The initial escape room where we mix zombies and vampires with Santa actually sounds awesome and I would love to take part. But, i like how the title reels you into thinking this is potentially a sweet piece about family and Christmas but it's really about how to make Christmas sellable. And it's in ways that to the masses would likely be considered offensive but to the people pitching it's noble, brilliant, topical. I think that's capitalism in a nutshell!

Excellent send-up of the fight against capitalism and commercialism at Christmas. Nothing heartwarming about it, and that's the point. Yay!

  • Claudia Haas: The True Meaning of Christmas

You have to love a play that has mall employees debating the worthiness of zombie Santa, Mrs. Claus baking brain-cookies for Christmas or Santa raping a reindeer. All are commercially viable and in the news. This play is perfect for all the alternative Christmas festivals popping up for those who have overdosed on candy canes and Hallmark.
