Stumbling around in the dark, Jonathan and his wife Natalie arrive from Manhattan at the Vermont farmhouse of Jonathan’s brother Timothy, his wife Grace and grandchild Amy. Holmes needs to borrow $70,000 from Timothy who dropped out 35 years ago to be a hippy farmer but has made money selling off his farmland. After only a day or two, Jonathan and Nathalie discover country life is far from bucolic – Timothy’s on the same anti-depressants as Jonathan. Fractures soon occur in each man’s relationship with his wife as well. Finally, however, the four hash out their differences – reading poetry and smoking pot helps – and discover ways to connect as they face past choices and future mortality.

I saw a production of this play in Santa Fe, New Mexico recently and was intrigued by the plot and the mix of characters. The four adult characters were all doing life assessment and not entirely liking what they saw. But they forged ahead, mistakes and all. It was a pleasure to see a sold-out show and a crowd absorbed in the play and hanging on to every word.

I saw a reading of this at the William Inge Play Festival in 2018. What a great play with well drawn characters and interesting, funny dialogue. Zibart is an extremely talented writer. She writes fascinating, deep, real characters in very real situations. This was a crowd favorite at the Inge - everybody loved it. It's a play about what really matters in life, a deep play - I highly recommend it!
