Loving and Loving

by Beto O'Byrne

Inspired by the Loving v. Virginia Supreme Court decision, the case which struck down all bans on interracial marriage in the United States in 1967, this play uses three performers to tell this story of Richard and Mildred Loving with a present-day perspective and dramatic sensibility.

Beto's play was an excellent addition to Florida Rep's 2019 PlayLab Festival. LOVING AND LOVING uses a truly unique storytelling device to get inside the personal story behind a story that we all know from the headlines of history. Producing his play at our festival gave us a refreshing challenge to incorporate interviews and stories from our own community.

A beautiful, spare (and truly unique) examination of mixed-race love and what it means to be multiracial in America. I was struck by the poetry and power of this 3-person play; a true lovesong to the Lovings.
