Cam Girl

by Em Swenson

From her central Florida bedroom, Kelsey sheds her clothes and fulfills fantasies for men around the world. On camera she has no boundaries, but in reality she is incapable of leaving her apartment. Cam Girl boldly exposes the lives of three women working in the sex industry and the bond they share.

"Cam Girl" portrays three friends who can neither live in the world as it's constructed, nor break away from it; who have abundant love to give each other while each is incapable of receiving it. These struggles manifest themselves through the lens of sex work, drug use, and queer identity. The true greatness of this play is the high stakes it wrings out of the simple question of whether Kelsey will leave the house.

Cam Girl paints a complicated portrait of queer people struggling to find peace; peace within themselves and peace within a large, slippery world. There’s lovely nuance and specificity here and great, complex roles for actors.

We just directed this with Theater Oblivion, in Philadelphia. Emily Swenson has such an incredible talent of juggling multiple-topics by creating visceral characters and stage action. The world she creates is jammed packed with high-stakes and humor that immerses the audience in the play. The overall audience reception of the piece was effective and positive. If you are an artist or a company who is not afraid of producing edgy material, I would seriously consider this play for part of your season.
