Sexy, witty, and refreshingly real, Champagne sparkles with sharp dialogue and emotional depth. Duncan captures the tension between desire and vulnerability in a beautifully honest, unforgettable encounter.

Watching Nicole overplay her hand in this tart, honest two-hander brought to mind Lena Horne's description of Pal Joey as someone who "ain't always quite as slick as he's s'posed to be." She's got her money and she's got her attitude and she's as alone at the ending as she was at the start, but her time with Steph had clearly disrupted her complacency about many aspects of her life.

The contrast is sharp between these two black women downing champagne together - one a well-to-do jive talker, the other a well-educated chemist who just moved to DC. But they're both looking for a connection at the same time they are both resisting one. Will they get past their mutual defenses and Stef's obsession with STDs to hook up? Will Nicole try that call again or just give up? The play's not saying!

What a treat to read this breezy play. Duncan creates a sexy mood and scene with “Champagne” and I fell into the charm of it all. Love the back and forth of the two women and just wanted it to keep going but then why mess with perfection when it’s this good as a ten minute. Thanks for sharing your work with us on NPX!

A really wonderful slice of life play with an important message at the end. Both women are smart with tons of personality and bite and they spend the first half of the play bantering back and forth with sharp, cleanly crafted dialogue. These are two very engaging women and I'd love to see them developed in a longer piece. Well-written, well done!

A perfect cat and mouse, where the cat and mouse keep changing. Witty, smart, quick. I love these two women so immediately because they feel so true and so real. This would be an awesome addition to an evening of short plays.

Two lesbians drunk on champagne engage in a tug-a-words in a nightclub. Fierce and feisty dialog reveal the fronts that people put up to hide their insecurities. I've never read flirting like this before; it's intimate and intense. Sometimes to truly connect with someone you gotta be hard--you gotta call the other person out on their s**&! I was surprised to have feelings for Nicole at the end; my heart broke for her.
