To The Grind

by Adriano Cabral

This semi solo-performance is an autoethnodramatic exploration of sexual identity and the development of an “ideal voice” through sexuality while dealing with the effects of technology on the ability to communicate in the gay community.

This play is funny, sexy, visceral, and horrifying. We're lead through a series of sexual relationships juxtaposed against a voice class, that creates wonderful ground for tension and relief. And while I laughed out loud several times, the end had me in tears. I love the sexuality of TO THE GRIND, how Cabral paints pictures of bodies speaking without words, and the engaging language throughout.

To The Grind is such a funny and real-life look at one mans sexual journey as communicated during a voice lesson. Love that the names and descriptions of those lessons already sound so sensual and are coupled with details of 1’s different encounters which left me breathless after finishing this play which isn't a bad thing. Such a great role and compelling journey for a young actor!

After reading this play, you'll want to have lots of sex. Has a play ever done that to you before? Let this be the first play to do that. This is an erotic performance piece with voice exercises and Grinder chat that intelligently explores sex as a 'language of the body' (to use Kathy Acker's words). That language might be the most powerful tool we - gay or not - have when words are not enough. Your voice coach, the protagonist, might be a slut, but don't slut-shame: he's a smart slut. Loosen up your buttons and read this play.
