Albumen is a three character play that focuses on happiness: the perception we have of the happiness of others and the steps to find happiness when we realize we are not happy with our lives.

Jessa, a woman in her early thirties, decides, after art school and some early success, to leave painting and her artistic career behind. She has been working in an office doing clerical work for almost ten years. Jessa still spends some of her time posing for one of her art school teachers, photographer and very well-known artist Danielle. Jessa meets Lucas, a nurse at the blood bank where she frequently donates blood as a way to feel useful, and they begin a, mostly sexual, relationship that forces Jessa to acknowledge her own unhappiness and take steps to put herself first and change her life.

The imagery of photography is prevalent in Albumen and events in the play come into focus piece by piece, not necessarily in a linear fashion, but rather like photographs being developed in a dark room, depth and contrast created with the use different chemical baths. The timeline of the story is deconstructed and weaves in and out of the present linear. Some moments, like the first time Jessa and Lucas meet, are presented multiple times from various angles, like taking different photographs of the same subject. These moments become strange leitmotiv in the interactions between characters. The structure of the play is presented like a show in an art gallery, where every tableau shows different moments in time and where seeing the entirety of the exhibit brings forth a narrative.

  • Matt Hertendy: Albumen

A visceral snapshot (pun intended) of a love, sex, sadness, and creative strife. Lavigne paints (pun intended) wonderful word-pictures evoking strong images throughout. Interesting, fully formed characters jump off the page with distinctive voices. Can't wait to see this on stage!
