When the grandfather she hasn’t seen in a year offers to teach her to ice skate, it is the last thing she wants to do. Lovely and loving, SKATING is a heartfelt, magical story about surviving your first great loss, at whatever age that happens. The pond becomes a sacred space in the natural world, blending the spiritual and the deeply earthy and physical so that they seamlessly melt into one another. Infinite possibilities for staging for a wide variety of creative teams, Adams' play would make an equally charming low-budget staged reading at a school or at a large venue with the budget to bring magic into reality.

This is a beautiful, poignant play about loss and coming-of-age at the tender age of ten. Ellie's struggles are everyone's struggles and young audiences will connect with her and root for her. Adams brings magic into the mix but it's not abracadabra - it's winter magic from the natural world. The blend of down-to-earth reality and winter enchantment drew me in. I never wanted to leave. I hope to see this on a stage soon.
