Recommendations of Really Adult

  • Debra A. Cole: Really Adult

This is a coming of age piece about Julie and a cautionary tale about Frank. RACHEL BUBLITZ creates believable characters that have full lives and real flaws apparent in just a limited number of pages. A rollercoaster of emotions for both the reader and audiences. I should have known that big drama happens in the Customer Service department at Target.

  • Paul Donnelly: Really Adult

This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship or a total train wreck. These two people find themselves working the Customer Service desk as the result of difficult life circumstances. Both are credible and to a degree sympathetic. And yet their connection doesn't feel quite right. This is a richly textured and nuanced piece.

  • Christopher Plumridge: Really Adult

REALLY ADULT is very down to earth with believable, natural dialogue between the two characters. You can't help but feel sorry for Julie in her innocence as she discovers the truth about her new colleague. I enjoyed this play!

  • Anne Flanagan: Really Adult

Really Adult captures both one's regret at what may have been and one's hope for what could still be. A charming, touching slice of life that leaps off the page.

  • Cheryl Bear: Really Adult

A completely spot on presentation of the modern American dream. Well done.

  • Kevin Cirone: Really Adult

A really tight cohesive look at human relationships and the different trajectories (and speeds) in which an adult's life can unfold. Compelling, realistic characters and a relatable concept.

  • John Minigan: Really Adult

This is an absolutely lovely play. Clear and compelling characters on a journey that you think you can predict, but which surprises you in the way it surprises the characters--which is exactly how their lives have surprised them as they've reached adulthood. There is a finely wrought blend of joy and heartbreak in this piece, and two characters you care about and root for romantically, and then care about even more deeply as their "targets" shift during their Target shift. Precise and heartfelt work.

I love this play! It's filled with surprises, realistically written, and every moment seems so organic. I also love the flexibility of the ending, how it could go either way. Makes me wish I could direct it.

Bublitz creates a fascinating short play where we think we know everything, but instead get some fun surprises. Her characters are intriguing, her situation is one we can commiserate with and the ending leaves me eager for more. Would love to see it staged!

Bublitz has such a gift for writing young adults. She is so respectful of them, but she is so honest--capturing them in all their stuttering awkwardness and sheepish attempts at actually committing to something. "Really Adult" is a fantastic two-hander, a slice of life that is really neither funny nor dramatic. It's a bit of both. These two characters are both so determined to be something they are not and are so embarrassed by who they are. The end made me cringe. I sure hope Julie and Frank figure "adulting" out.
