Such a Pretty Face

Holly is fat. Gabe is not. Despite Gabe's adamance that her weight doesn't bother him, Holly's best friends Dan and Renee are skeptical.

In between the action of the story, a trio of women (à la plus-size greek chorus) propels the narrative via monologues, slam poetry, and physical storytelling.

This mold-breaking comedy/spoken word story dissects the realities of "dating while fat" and looks at body image, relationships, and identity. In a world that wants women to downsize in just about every way, Such A Pretty Face is the fat anthem we have all been weighting for.

This play is incredible! There's so much truth, beauty and pain in this piece. It's incredibly moving and deeply important, a gorgeous statement on loving yourself and chasing your dreams wherever they may lead you. Fantastic!

SAPF is a light hearted play that follows The Girl through her journey of a new relationship. The play, while being comical and fresh, also shines light on something every fat person has to deal with while searching for their significant other. The refreshing dialogues, the beautiful way relationships are portrayed, the occasional slam poetry between scenes, and simply the theme of this play makes it one of a kind. Kudos to Martin for showcasing something most of us fat people have to deal with in our every day life, in such a beautiful way.

A good script with solid dialogue that is elevated to another level with the inclusion of periodic monologues that have a special kind of poetry, making what is true in the script even more present and real. Martin has a clear talent for capturing the rhythm of everyday speech. The characters are vividly alive and their joy, and their pain, is visceral in its impact. I've read the play twice now, and there is so much depth in the quick-paced scenes that I really can't wait to see it staged.
