  • Sean Abley: Welcome to Leisureville

As experienced by this audience member at a reading, this play is funny, sad, and sexy, and ultimately a nuanced exploration of grief, motherhood and chosen family. The writing is both witty and biting, and with three juicy roles for women this play would be a great choice for professional, academic and community theaters.

Patterson is one of those master playwrights who truly takes care of an audience's need to feel a full range of emotion. In Welcome to Leisureville, she is at her finest, creating entertaining living, breathing characters with whom we experience the hurt, betrayal, and high comedy of a tragic family moment. There is so much there there, that we miss Leisureville when we leave it-- that we continue her story to our cars and our homes and crack up in bed hours later, before remembering that one tragic detail that made the whole thing so real.
