Webb writes a stunning relationship that is punctuated by immense joy as well as deep pain. The Light tackles the reality of sexual violence head on, particularly the unique trauma experienced by Black women.

It is at once 100% completely relatable AND also that once in a lifetime opportunity to experience black intimate life not adjusted for whiteness. It’s refreshing to read a play about black people that is not based on (post) racial trauma.It’s rare and beautiful.

THE LIGHT is a gorgeous, personal, and political play that contains explosive multitudes in its seemingly slim frame. Companies across the country should give this gift to its audiences.

This is frankly one of the best plays I've ever seen. You will find yourself slowly but inescapably drawn in by Gen and Shad, with all their wit and grace and flaws and secrets. The Light is a truly important play, timely now but meaningful in a way that will echo down the decades.

A deceptively simple exploration of several complex, multi-faceted, and difficult topics handled with grace and compassion. Genesis and Rashad are two well-developed, flawed, yet likable protagonists who are both trying to be the change they want to see in the world, and both of their perspectives are well-articulated and valid. Thought-provoking and timely, "The Light" challenges us to LISTEN to each other, and to be better towards one another.

This is a fascinating two-hander that makes us sit with how we deal with beloved artists that have done horrible things. The characters are so complex and this play does what great theatre should do, leave the audience with way more questions than answers.

I am kicking myself I didn't go to see this while it was just showing here in Chicago!

Two lead characters so beautifully realized. And their argument felt so real! Claustrophobic in the good way.

The logic of their fight was inevitable and surprising at the same time, if that makes sense. A play about big ideas, a wonderfully smart play, but also one with a heart.

I cannot recommend this play highly enough.

How can we have large political conversations in an intimate, naturalistic space? This play proposes a few good answers to that question. These are real people onstage having real conversations about it means to be a black woman in today's America, and how all oppressed people have more self-worth than the false dichotomies that are foisted upon them.

The Light is a story I have not seen on stage before, yet I immediately recognized its truth. It resonates deeply with the #MeToo movement but goes so much deeper. One feels they are peeking in on one of the most intimate moments in a relationship. There is not one word wasted in this play. I was a wreck after - felt all the feels, joy, pain, despair, anger, forgiveness - in the best way. I am not exaggerating when I say this play must be done all over the country right now.
