Static: Blinded

by Isaac Otterman

This was the worst blizzard in Montana's history and Barry Kashini and Samantha Cooke were caught in the middle of it. With nowhere to go and no hope to latch onto, what's real slips away into the white screaming void and all that's left are the truths of these lives.

Whether it be war, love or the history of the radio we all have something to run from.

Intense, original, fast-paced, and powerful. Two strangers — a young man gripped by his personal history of violence and his heritage as an Iraqi, a young woman victimized by her philandering ex-husband — meet against the backdrop of a horrendous Montana blizzard and a car accident leading to their probable deaths. Episodes of remembrance and hallucination alternate with reality as the two confront their likely fates. This 1-act play offers not only great opportunities for the main actors, but also for the lighting and sound designers. Well-worth producing!

Aside from his eloquently savage words, Isaac Otterman also uses sound and visceral visual descriptions in his stage directions to create a complete theatre piece. "Static: Blinded" works on so many levels it's almost as disorienting as the blizzard in which Samantha and Barry find themselves trapped, and that's the point of this sharp, uncomfortable, and excitingly theatrical play.

"Static: Blinded" by Isaac Otterman takes the reader into the blinding static of a Montana blizzard. The relentless onstage noise accompanies an intense examination of human violence, infidelities, illness and injustices. The reader, the actors and the director will be challenged by Otterman's script, as it knits together historic events that include Guglielmo Marconi's radio invention and The Children's Blizzard of 1888. There are many levels to this play.
