When Carol and Micha find out about detained Salvadorans fleeing civil war, they set out to process political asylum applications. After meeting Victor, a Salvadoran in a Border Patrol detention center, they realize that they're going to need help. They call on Father Hartford who meets Nidia, a Salvadoran with strong opinions at another detention center. Micha and Carol enlist Jeff Chord, who sits on the National Presbyterian Council and before long Quaker Will Hewitt joins the group with ideas of his own. But Nidia and Victor are on opposite sides of the war, the number of detained Salvadorans keeps growing, and the group has to come to terms with their personal issues, and choose between the law of man and the law of God.

A mesmerizing look at a part of world history that does not get discussed often. I appreciated how this play looks a the not so glamorous aspects of the immigration issue. This really looks into what seemingly ordinary people can do to help people coming to this country for refuge. I also appreciated how this play looks at how faith communities can play a part in this issue. I'd love to see religious leaders look at this play and see how they can help migrants today. A very relevant play.

This is a beautifully rendered small story that addresses a large socio-political, historical event well using a super specific set of characters and narrative. Ortiz chooses a cast that represents a distinct cross section of humanity with regards to race, sexual orientation, and religion that lends a vital intersectional layer to the piece. "Sanctuary" is engaging and thought-provoking throughout! I hope to track this play's development trajectory.
