Twisted Deaths

by Shannon TL Kearns

Pam and Ryan couldn’t be more different. He is a young transgender man and she is an older conservative woman but when they are both diagnosed with cancer their lives intersect in ways that neither of them could have ever imagined.

This work explores questions of identity, relationships, our health care system, and who has control over your body and life.

In a world that demands hopelessness, "Twisted Deaths" shines a light on how communities form and come together to find purpose in the end times. With its earnest characters, unexpected turns and brutal pleas for empathy, this script touched regions of my heart that other artists seldom explore. This is by far Kearns' best work that I've had yet to read, and as kindness continues to be a scant commodity, its timeliness only grows.

Shannon's work is deeply resilient and I'm ready for more. His work resonates and strikes a chord I didn't know I needed struck. This is a play that will keep conversation in motion long after its curtain. I had the pleasure of getting to know Shannon and his work at the 2019 LAMBDA literary conference. I feel a powerful combination of relief and excitement knowing that Shannon is creating work in our industry. Get him in the room.

An achingly beautiful play that empathetically lays bare how broken our systems are and how damaging keeping parts of yourself secret can be. And yet, this play also shows how, even now, in the most dire of circumstances, two unlikely strangers can bridge the gap and build a community. Kearns has a way of writing dialogue that is both gorgeous and naturalistic. Do yourself a favor and produce this stunning, timely play!
