Recommendations of AZTEC PIRATES & THE INSIGNIFICANCE OF LIFE ON MARS

  • Annalise Cain: AZTEC PIRATES & THE INSIGNIFICANCE OF LIFE ON MARS

This play is absolutely devastating: beautifully rendered, with a world so rich and dark it won't leave you alone. Davila looks at Johnny from all angles, and won't let us simplify him as a character, even if his actions make us want to. Ready to see this onstage ASAP.

  • Lainie Vansant: AZTEC PIRATES & THE INSIGNIFICANCE OF LIFE ON MARS

This piece is utterly haunting. Davila creates characters who are indisputably terrible people but he leaves them with just enough humanity that I still want them to be redeemed. It's a difficult line to tow, but he's done it well. This is a whirlwind, surreal look inside the head of someone with PTSD. It's complex, rich, and well worth your time.

We were honored to be a part of the early development of this play and cannot recommend it enough. It has everything good plays should have: strong characters, high stakes, compelling story and highly theatrical. So yes, we recommend this play. BUT while you are looking check out the other two plays in this trilogy they do not disappoint either.

I was fortunate to see a virtual reading of this play through the Landing Theatre's New American Voices Festival 2021. It's a gripping exploration of cultural identity, what it means to be American, and how we exert our power over others. Intense and raw, Davila dives into the timely subject matter, analyzing the complexities of immigration, identity, gender, and power, while maintaining a grounded focus on the characters and their individual circumstances and journeys.

A timely, bold play that demands your attention. The intense story analyzes the complexities of cultural identity while balancing truthful stories of violence and aggression immigrants face as they attempt to call the United States home.

A riveting search for the truth and redemption as we're at a crucial time in deciding what it means to be American as we see brutality reign. Well done.

I LOVE THIS PLAY. Aztec Pirates & The Insignificance of Life on Mars is timely in its exploration of race at the border, with heartbreakingly real characters whose pain we feel deeply. Davila has a musician's grasp on how this play sounds--experiencing this play is as atmospheric and visceral as listening to a great piece of music and moves fluidly from scene to scene with a myriad of specific, and usually underrepresented, voices making up its powerful chorus. This play is deeply urgent and must be seen!

  • Christin Eve Cato: AZTEC PIRATES & THE INSIGNIFICANCE OF LIFE ON MARS

Wow, my heart. This play hits me deeply because of how relevant it is with America's immigration policies and how they can psychologically impact the human beings involved with the atrocities that are often enforced without will. Davila introduces a new point of view that is heartbreaking and thought-provoking. The structure of this play keeps us guessing and at the edge of our seats. Highly theatrical, this piece also moves swiftly like a film. This is an important play you must experience.
