Recommendations of Alpha Betty

  • Daniel Smith: Alpha Betty

A very funny short play (16 pages) with absurdist vibes and witty wordplay reminiscent of classic sketch comedy routines like “Who’s on First?” As they wait in line for the restroom, five women (whose names conveniently start with A, B, C, D, and E) play a game that requires taking turns to list an animal for each letter of the alphabet. The game proceeds in fits and starts as they evaluate each other’s answers and question their category choices.

Very funny, fast, clever dialogue. Like a Vaudeville sketch but with a modern feel. Should be a joy to perform for any group of five women lucky enough to be cast. And this is sure to have the psychological effect of giving audience members the same urge as these women. Just try to hold it until the end!

Having played this game before I love the creative way the writer uses word play throughout as this group of ladies take what is a fairly simple game and end up in utter chaos. I can picture the audience laughing up a storm. This may be the first play of this writer's that I have read but it won't be the last if this brilliantly funny piece is anything to go by.

Amusing, brilliant, clever, delightful, electrifying! An extended game of logic and verbal dexterity that's something like Alice in Wonderland meets Monty Python.
