The Survivors/Los Sobrevivientes

by Katie Bender

The Survivors/Los Sobrevivientes is based on the historically documented group of women, children and enslaved people who survived the battle of the Alamo. It’s an epic historical drama told by a diverse ensemble of people who didn’t make it into the history books. It’s an intimately drawn look at the surprising alliances necessary to survive the shifting and mercurial rule of Mexico’s fledgling democracy.

In The Survivors/Los Sobrevientes, Katie Bender shape-shifts a revered but rote historical legend into an intimate, even voyeuristic, retelling that satisfies on multiple levels. As a native Texan, I fell hard for Bender's irreverent un-telling of our state's historical spirit-animal. Treading unlightly on regional lore, the playwright soars as she swivels the narrative lens to a dizzying and satisfying inside-out perspective. Conquerors be damned, this warts-and-all survivor story takes plenty of prisoners. Come for the myth. Stay for the feels!

I saw a production of this play at Texas State University and the absolute depth that Bender has managed to embed in these titans of historical narrative is astounding. The moments of where all three of the women come together to live, discuss, and actively experience their sides of the battle of the Alamo left chills as I witnessed the show. It's a beautifully rich play with so much attention To detail--even as someone who lives by the Alamo, this play transported me there instantly. It's a great read if you're looking for a juicy story to dive into today!
