Some clever writing here in this play about play where there are "two kinds of theatre: the well-made play and War." There's action and history from the start, which is intriguing, and we break from tradition and expectation again and again.

Character Information

  • Réjane
Réjane, a groundbreaking woman, actress, and mother ahead of her time, is blazing into the 20th Century. Réjane constantly pushes herself as an artist, and ultimately helps to usher in naturalistic theater. She has two children with her sometime Director and Theatre Manager, Porel, who she eventually marries. Réjane choice to continue performing while pregnant helps to change Parisian fashion, as women copy her flowing (bump hiding) gowns. Her most trail-blazing feat is also her most painful, when, as part of her divorce proceedings, she wins the legal right to sign her own contracts in a time married women are not permitted to do so. Above all things Réjane is committed to progress. Actress, who should be cast late 30s - early 40s, plays a woman from her late teens to her 40s.
