This is an exquisite play about the complexities of grieving a loved one. Marie is a compelling protagonist and propels the play forward with kinetic energy. She is flanked by equally nuanced and well-drawn supporting characters, including a meaty and surprising cameo role in Charlene close to the end. The dialogue is an uncanny combination of spare, naturalistic, and profound. In avoiding sentimentality, Finocchiaro ultimately creates a potent play that is an emotional bomb! The well-paced scenes move at a steady clip, always engaging and, at turns, funny and heartbreaking. I hope this atmospheric piece is produced frequently!

mother's son explores the relationship between mothers and sons through the lens of a mother's grief, while also allowing us to examine how our actions affect those around us, even those we don't know. It is a haunting and deeply affecting play.

mother's son is very, very fresh. It provides a deft and sensitive portrayal of a mother’s grief and confusion. The ethereal coolness of her son’s music career is as present in the room as his specter. I really enjoyed the structure of the play, with its alternating confrontations and forged alliances. The dual mother scene, between Charlene and Marie, was one of the best sections. Imagine Gwendolyn and Cecily as tired, unwed mothers, squaring off!

Definitely read this play. This gentle and sweeping tale of a parent rebuilding their dead child - fragment by fragment, memory by memory - is beautifully told. Bursting with humor and life, the writer’s refreshing perspective and vivid characters keep us in rapt attention throughout the piece, and gives us something to talk about on the way home. Really looking forward to seeing this staged!!
