Playwrights Foundation enthusiastically recommends this play, CJ, A TRILINGUAL PLAY, as a Semi-Finalist for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival 2020. We were moved by the quality of the writing and the relevant and compelling themes that spoke to the mission of our festival. It excelled in a competitive process of 735 plays submitted this year and rose to the top after a six month long process discussing its merits with both national and local Bay Area readers, and we hope it moves swiftly towards production.

Heartbreaking, wildly funny, and imaginative. Floresislas deftly spins a captivating tale with universal themes while seamlessly integrating four languages into the narrative. This play is not only beautifully written; it boldly explores the intersectionality of Deaf and Latinx cultures in the quest to understand identity.

I was lucky enough to see a reading of "CJ" as part of Milagro Theatre's Ingenio Festival in September and highly recommend it for further production/development opportunities. Mercedes expertly navigates between different worlds in a story that incorporates 4 different languages. Her writing is fiercely loving, generous and beautiful.

YOOOOO Mercedes does not play with this play... yep. Seriously, this is a unique work, an experiment of sorts that works on almost every level. A necessary show, a risky show, and if done right a historic one. AKA Producing companies, develop it!!!

I hope more readers will discover this compelling story, interwoven with the textures and patterns that span generations and bridging not two languages, but three. Floresislas transports us through space and time in this unique, relevant and powerful play. I'm so glad to have the chance to see it performed at Milagro Theatre's Ingenio Festival. I hope to see spaces bring this amazing piece into full production soon.

A brilliant challenging work. Written with such heart, with such a great ear (and hand) for language. This play actually uses FOUR languages (Spanish, English, ASL and Nahuatl.) and weaves a story fluidly with them. The way a deaf woman is treated by her own mother will break your heart.

A play unlike anything you have seen before. Trilingual, with sign language, it is a beautiful exploration of family, and identity with wonderful roles for actors. The deaf Latino community has found a champion in Mercedes Floresislas.
