Recommendations of Model Minority

  • Emma Goldman-Sherman: Model Minority

A deep exploration of race in America with such compelling and specific characters and a great sense of humor. Hung has an authentic voice and the ability to show us the problem with concision and a feeling of truth conveyed through characters pursuing their objectives. Excellent work.

  • Shaun Leisher: Model Minority

A great play that looks at race in such a unique way. A play that explores race without white people and yet the white gaze is still very present. Filled with great roles for Asian-Americans and a black actor. Would love to see a theatre get brave and produce this play. This is definitely a conversation starter.

A beautifully rhythmic exploration and deep reflection on life, identity and understanding as one finds their voice. Well done!

  • Nick Malakhow: Model Minority

A deftly told intersectional story that centers around five extremely compelling and human characters. As she focuses on this small group of people, Hung explores and illuminates issues of identity and belonging, racism and stereotypes within and between various groups of color, and more! Through hilarious dialogue and insightful conversations, Anna, Cynthia, Roland, and Jimmy change and evolve through their work with Derek. The final coda to the piece is satisfying and beautifully written. I hope to see a production of this sometime soon!

  • Ely Sonny Orquiza: Model Minority

MODEL MINORITY is a rarity; a complex story about friendship and the intersectionality between prejudice and privilege. It's funny, raw, and emotional. Examines the theme of identity and belonging through the medium of rap and hip hop. I highly recommend this play; a wonderful addition to the Asian American contemporary narratives for the stage.

  • Sarah Izzo: Model Minority

I love how this play allows its characters to mess up and continue to learn. Through a teenage lens, the questions around identity, cultural appropriation, and how we live our values are particularly fraught: how do you figure out who you are and assert your own voice while understanding what life is like for other people? All of the characters are imperfect, and all of them are trying. Funny and important.

This play is wonderful. A very funny and contemporary exploration of ethnicity, privilege, racism, and friendship.

Funny and emotionally generous, sweet and open-hearted while also tackling important issues. Reminded me of Idris Goodwin's HOW WE GOT ON in its loving portrait of young people coming of age and finding themselves through music. All of the characters are unique and specific, and you will find yourself rooting for each and every one of them. Such a joy.
