The play starts out as a meditation on mortality and relationships, then quickly takes a shocking turn (which I won't describe here). The twist is masterful and David's ultimate objective, when finally revealed, made it a delight to read.

This dark comedy/drama isn't for the faint of heart, but the pitch-perfect surprise in the second half makes it easy to recommend. With great characters and dialogue in a creative situation, this is a stellar script—especially for those who don't like their plays falling into neat, clean categories.

I love it when I find plays that totally take me by surprise. Brewer peels back the layers of these characters so well and really dives into what humans are capable of doing when they feel they have no other choice. That twist will leave you picking up your jaw off the floor! Deliciously sick.

A play that you never figure out until the end. There are so many layers to this play--first, you think it'll be a romantic comedy, then, a twist out of nowhere changes everything. The language in this play is absolutely phenomenal. Brewer knocks it out of the park at the character descriptions, and only continues from there. This is a play that you can't get out from under your skin.

This was the play I didn't get a chance to see at the MDC conference, but this was the one everyone was talking about. Amazing. Well done twist. Gorgeous. My kind of play!

Oh my goodness — this play will bring you in close and leave you with your jaw hanging open. I was totally sucked in during a recent staged reading, and I'm so glad to have had the chance to re-read it just to see how Brewer build this tight ten-minutes.

A wonderful, atmospheric play about two people whose history goes a lot deeper than the audience ever expected. This is a twisty, turny thriller in the Southern Gothic tradition. Give this one a read!

This is a very well-crafted, deceptively simple story that gets your attention at the very start and takes you along to the end with a twist and a turn that leaves you gaping. Wow.

Joshua Brewer's DIRT has a unique talent of squeezing lifetimes of emotions out of two characters and just a few pages more. He leads us one way and we're down another path altogether in this jaw-dropper of a play. It's tender, twisted, and tragic. To pack this much into such a short play is a sign of talent. You will find yourself going back to the beginning to see if you missed something because of how left-field this play comes at you. But when you read it again, you understand; it was there all along. Just look in the dirt.
