Recommendations of Eleanor Descending a Staircase

  • Cheryl Bear: Eleanor Descending a Staircase

A hilarious comedy about art and a woman who just wanted to buy a present for her husband. Alas there is a very strict set of rules about what is art and what isn't that thwarts her. Very fun!

This play is so funny I couldn’t stop laughing at the character list. It perfectly captures the gleeful nonsense of Dada, and skewers the lengths consumers will go to get what they want. Great fun!

  • Steven Hayet: Eleanor Descending a Staircase

I don’t know if “Eleanor Descending a Staircase“ is art or if it’s anti-art, but I know it’s hysterical.
Ian August has written a gem of a short play that takes us around the world with sharp, witty, Monty Python-esque banter. Great roles for strong comedic actors. "Eleanor" would provide a jolt of absurd fun to any short play line-up.

A little brilliant absurdist theater by August and such a joy to read. From the title to the action, I was hooked and enjoyed every second of it. I feel so many days like Eleanor but at work I sometimes feel like the clerk and so enjoyed taking a break and reading such a funny and wild play. Will enjoy discovering other works by August for sure.

This is exactly how I feel most days and most nights of my life in this world. It's a good thing I don't have what Eleanor has in her purse. Thank you Ian August for what one calls an absurdist look at art (and I just call my life). I highly recommend this play and would produce it myself if I were to morph into a producer.

  • Isaiah Reaves: Eleanor Descending a Staircase

This absurdist, wildly funny piece is truly bizarre in the best possible way. This high octane comedy works because the play has a specific rhythmic pulse, which is enhanced by repetition. The imaginative potential of a bare stage would truly bring this piece to life, as through the reading of this piece, I was reminded of what make theatricality truly unique. In the midst of this comedy, one is able to detect subtext of privilege, war, and the meaning of art. Loved it!

A 10-minute farce with international scope. Ian August does his ridiculous best to keep protagonist Eleanor from achieving her goal: to purchase a print of "Nude Descending a Staircase." It's a well-constructed comedy with pattern, wordplay, absurd logic and theatricality to tell the story: the kind of theater I especially enjoy. This is another winning short play by August.
