  • Peter Fenton: Allen's Big Adventure

This monologue, much like the piece it was later expanded into, made me cry. It’s a profound reflection on a life well-lived and loved and a beautifully vulnerable illustration of why we should always write what we know. Allen may have left for the biggest adventure of all, but his memory lives on in his lovers’ memory and mementos of a life together. A hauntingly beautiful piece.

  • Adam Richter: Allen's Big Adventure

It seems like an impossible task to articulate the hole in our lives that people leave behind when they die, but Philip Williams has done it, with poignancy and beautiful language. In a few short minutes the audience gets such a detailed view of Allen, of Philip and of their relationship that they, too, share in the sense of loss.

  • Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend: Allen's Big Adventure

This is a beautiful monologue about love and grief and how people linger with us long after they're gone. It paints such a rich picture of who Allen was, who Allen and Philip were together, and who Philip is on his own. It's a perfect encapsulation of loss. Just lovely.

So with monologues I like to read them out loud to see how they sound. This is a beautiful piece with so many images that the character and the deceased shared that you feel like you are part of their life by the time that its over. I especially love the last line (even if it did make me cry)

I was truly touched by this heartfelt monologue. When a loved one passes, we need to hang on to the wonderful memories we had together. PHILIP MIDDLETON WILLIAMS has crafted a powerful and emotional outpouring of memories, feelings, and love. I would love to see this performed.

Oh, this monologue is just beautiful. While recounting all of the adventures the two shared I could feel a full life unfold, and the sentimentality of death as the next big adventure really hit hard. Lovely!

Williams monologue shows the true strength of love which can take hold of us without warning. Most times, that seems to be the love that is more powerful as if by not looking for it, it knocks us down all the more forcefully. Philip mourns for his soulmate, and that emotion is so so real and insightful for anyone who's ever had someone like Allen in their life,

Isolated from Middleton’s longer “A Tree Grows In Longmont,” this monologue of memory takes on even more depth, more poignancy, and more heartbreaking beauty. Truly moving, truly stunning, and a gift for any actor who is lucky enough to perform it.

As far as short lifelong love stories go, the standard bearer, IMHO, is the opening of UP. Where that was all images, this piece is all words... and the images keep coming. A beautiful epistle with an extraordinary list of "adventures big and small," it was impossible not to get jealous of the adventures the speaker and Allen had together. So I got jealous. But in four double-spaced pages, we get the downs as well as the ups, the years apart and the years together. We get two glorious lives that, even in the end, were lucky beyond words.

What a touching piece! A recollection of the memories the protagonist shared with his soulmate. Williams focuses heavy on the power of memory, and how we can keep the deceased alive in our subconscious. This piece is didactic, as it taught me that life is temporary, and experiences are forever. Once again, Philip displays writing excellence with “Allen’s Big Adventure.”
