This full-length play moves Chekov's "The Three Sisters," set in turn of the century Russia, to WWII Washington D.C., where the sisters are now the daughters of a Black General, and who must cope with the social, economic, and cultural issues of this era, while resolving family stresses. While this play captures the differences still existing between the North and the South, as well as the stresses that arise between parents and children, siblings, and men and women, it is primarily a depiction of one family's life together, with the warmth and memories of the past.
It is a joyful celebration of African-American lives with an emotional and dramatic ending. The Three Graces is partially a docudrama/historic play in that it is an accurate depiction of how black soldiers were treated during WWII in America, tempered by the beat poetry of Zane Coleman.
