It’s been almost a year and a half since the great flood and only a month since Freddie’s wife, Cleo, abandoned the family. Now a single parent, Freddie struggles to make enough money to buy the medicine her mother, Pip, desperately needs and faces growing distrust from her son, Noah. Trying to keep her family together, Freddie takes a second job as a diver, scavenging beneath the ocean for sentimental items abandoned in the great flood. Freddie is haunted by a vision of Cleo bent on not letting her move on while Noah falls head-over-heels for a local boy named Paul. Noah and Freddie are pulled further apart and struggle with the daily challenges of post-apocalyptic life. When their relationship reaches a breaking point, Noah runs away leaving Freddie with one last chance to find him and keep her family together.

This moving play skillfully connects us to the human cost of our ravaging of the planet. I was fortunate enough to see it performed as a staged reading, and I was especially struck by the evocations of a water-logged world, which filled the space with images that still haunt me. As in the best speculative works, Vaughn's world-building is detailed and gives us a glimpse of life in a time of scarcity. A thoroughly gripping piece.

A moving reminder that even when everything changes and we are faced with the the end of the world, some things will not change. We will still fight with our family, have our heart broken and fear being abandoned. Fantastic roles for actors of various ages and LGBTQ actors.
