It’s 1978, the year of the Great Midwestern Blizzard. The wind howls past 110 miles per
hour, snowdrifts rise higher than doorways, and more than 100,000 cars lie abandoned on
snow packed roads. Caught in the storm is Hannah, a young woman with nowhere left to
go. Struggling to drive through whiteout conditions, she discovers Doc’s Bar & Grill just
as its owner prepares to close for the night. With the blizzard tightening its grip outside,
Doc’s wife, Rose, urges him to offer Hannah shelter. Reluctantly, he agrees. As the storm
rages, the three characters move through loss and shattered identities toward connection
and the possibility of healing.

Not many full-length (or long one-act) scripts do I end up reading on one gulp. This one I did. Gaumond's play starts out like your standard "three people caught in a storm" setpiece that touches you from the start and then gradually reveals itself as a ghost story where two souls locked in grief are finally set free. I loved it.

In the grand tradition of plays set in a pub, peopled by lost souls, North Wind stays true to its form while also taking surprising turns. A warm play in a chilly locale, Sarah Cosgrove crafts an original ghost story that feels like part of the classic American canon.

This is a beautifully evocative story about love, loss, forgiveness and rejuvenation. Cosgrove creates a hauntingly specific world with her lyrically poetic use of language – a world that is both harsh and forgiving – and she peoples it with characters whose wants and needs are both intimately personal, and larger than life. A thoughtful, tender and heartbreaking play.
