Part II of Benson’s Haitian Revolution trilogy, Deux Femmes on the Edge de la Revolution, TIGRESS OF SAN DOMINGUE continues the journey of Cécile, an enslaved African healer turned rebel soldier, and Valentine, a French expat caught between two worlds. As Cécile, rises up the military ranks, she is forced to choose between her obligation to family, and her loyalty to the revolution. Driven by a dangerous combination of trauma and ambition, she abandons her faith, and betrays the man she loves. As Valentine searches for answers about her origin, she must also search for the child she left behind. Meanwhile, tensions rise among the rebel soldiers under the contrasting leadership of Toussaint L’Ouverture and Jean- Jacques Dessalines. L’Ouverture, a free man for most of his life, opts for diplomacy over bloodshed. But his tactics lead to distrust among his troops, and eventually utter betrayal. Dessalines, physically and emotionally scarred after a lifetime of brutal enslavement, wants revenge as much as freedom. Loyal only to his people, he will show no mercy until complete independence is won. As San Domingue burns, and a new nation rises among the ashes, Cécile and Valentine must come together again to fulfill a prophecy.
