Recommendations of Guardian To Be

  • Sam Heyman: Guardian To Be

10/15/24: We love a ten minute play with a musical number! Guardian To Be is as farcical as it is poignant, with well drawn characters and a heartfelt sibling relationship at its center. I appreciated the ways that this play builds in strangeness until arriving at its satisfying, grounded conclusion. Kudos to Julie Zaffarano for this treat of a short!

What's crazy about this play is that Julie Zaffarano captures with such precision what every single parent goes through when selecting a guardian for their children.

OK, maybe not, but the difficult conversation would be much more fun if it had the singing, dancing and unfettered, delightful chaos that "Guardian To Be" contains. This is a fun and heartwarming play perfect for any short-play festival.

There are some strange extremes some people will go to in order to rest assured that their kids will be in good hands after they shuffle off this screwy coil. Julie Zaffarano has come up with a doozy: a potential guardian with an odd sense of place, humor and... well, their musical skills need work. I got to share this in a reading and it was hard not to laugh at the most inappropriate time. Fast-paced, witty, and even touching in all the right ways. (10/12/24)

  • Steven G. Martin: Guardian To Be

Sometimes when you're trying to get through to family, you've got to screw around a bit. "Guardian to Be" is a terrific example, and includes one of my favorite lyrics ever: "But you’ll be dead so c’est la vie." This play has screwball comedy moments, over-the-top characterization, and a heartwarming core. [24/10/12]

Love the chaotic energy. Would love to see it live. It's super fast, and funny, and even surprising! Tons of fun.

A witty and tight story around who is best fit to raise children. The dialogue is quick and the characters are identifiable from the jump. There is humor packed into these pages and it would be so much fun to see this performed. Great work!

A hilarious story of siblings and friendship as a surprising request for adoption prompts the reunion. Well done!
